Countdown to Christmas 12: The Pantomime

We think of pantomimes as being very british but they actually originated with a performance by french actors.  In 1717 these actors came to England and performed a show which included dogs. Later the shows would take fragments of fairy tales to give them plots. From early on these shows would include up to date elements.  Aladdin was originally performed when the first fast ships known as clippers began to bring tea to Britain from the Far East. In fact the character Widow Twankey takes her name from a type of tea.
