Often used as the excuse for a quick peck on the cheek, the history of this plant is actually quite dark!
For centuries it has had a reputation for magic. In Norse myth a mistletoe dart killed the Sun God Baldur. Its association with Pagan rites still bar it from churches, except York Minster where it enjoys a pardon until Twelfth Night. It must however on no account touch the ground!
And the kissing under the mistletoe? Legend has it that any young lady not kissed under the mistletoe will not marry in the year to come!
