Countdown to Christmas 4: Christmas Crackers

Tom Smith was  a sweet-maker based in London.  According to the company which still bears his name he was trying to come up with was of selling more of his sweet bon-bons at Christmas when he saw a spark from his log fire.  He thought that if he could make his sweets go bang they would sell well.  Tom eventually worked out how to make a controlled bang and his fire cracker sweets were very successful.  By the late 1840s, paper hats, mottos and gifts were added and he named his invention Cosaques.
