Christmas Countdown 2 : The Christmas Tree

Its thought that the Christmas tree originated in Germany.  Certainly the traditon was spread to America and Britain by German settlers.  It is often said that it was Queen Victoria who made the Christmas tree popular in Britain.  She married Prince Albert from Germany in  1840 and is said to have had her first Christmas Tree in 1841.  A description says that the tree was lit with 80 candles which must have been quite a fire hazard.

The Christmas tree replaced the earlier tradition of a kissing bunch.  This was made from two hoops and was decorated with holly, ivy, ribbons, fruit, nuts and sometimes with baubles.  The misletoe would also have hung from this.  As its name suggests just like today’s misletoe people were expected to steal a kiss when underneath the bunch.
