Festival of Arts turns 65!

Laying out school work for Festival of ArtsThis week Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery is preparing to open the 65th year of the Festival of Arts. The Festival of Arts is an open community exhibition that the museum hosts annually. Every year people submit their artwork to be put on display within the museum. The Festival features the categories art, craft, needlecraft and photography and the work is produced by both adults and children.

On Sunday entrants started to bring in their artwork for the art category and on Monday local schools brought in the children’s artwork. Firstly, the artists and teachers have to register the artwork into the Festival. Then the art is signed into the museum where the condition and value of the pieces are confirmed. It is then down to the museum team plan the exhibition layout, making sure that all the artwork is displayed at its best in the available space. Some years the museum has so many entrants the artwork is displayed floor to ceiling. There is a limit on the size of the artwork so that we can display as much as possible without running out of space.

All work entered into the Festival is judged by specially selected people with an interest and knowledge of the subject or category. Several cups and prizes are awarded for different categories by the Festival of Arts Committee.

The dates of the exhibitions in this year’s Festival of Arts are as follows

16th March to 14th April 2013 – Art

20th April to 19th May 2013 – Photography

25th May to 16th June 2013 – Craft & Needlecraft

About janineclarefox

My name is Janine Fox and I am Assistant Museum Officer at Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery. My role is to care and document the museum collection. Working within a small team means I also help install exhibitions, carry out research for enquiries and assist with larger museum projects. What inspires me? Apart from tea and chocolate, I would say travel, photography, art and anything old with a story to tell! It will come as no surprise that I love my job; I work with objects, ensuring that they are looked after, made available for the public and that their stories are recorded for perpetuity.
